Glyphosate 450 Xtraqatic Biactive Herbicide

Glyphosate 450 Xtraqatic Biactive Herbicide is a non-selective, non-residual aquatic-approved glyphosate weed killer designed to control a wide variety of aquatic, annual, and perennial weeds. Crucially, it is 25% stronger than traditional biactive glyphosate 360 herbicides, which means less product is required. This makes it a much more cost-effective option for large operations overall.

As a broad-spectrum herbicide, Glyphosate 450 Xtraqatic is ideal for general knockdown, pre-planting cleanup, and tackling established perennial weeds. What differentiates it from traditional glyphosate is the aquatic registration, which serves as a bonus for anyone seeking control of emerged weeds in bodies of fresh or brackish water (flowing, non-flowing, or transient).

Environmental use cases include weed control on the margins of streams, lakes, dams, channels, and drains, as well as in home gardens, agricultural buildings, and commercial, industrial, and public service areas.

What’s the difference between biactive glyphosate and standard glyphosate?

The main difference between standard and biactive glyphosate is the surfactant system used. Standard formulations of glyphosate use surfactants that aren’t approved for use in or near water, whereas Glyphosate 450 Xtraqatic Biactive Herbicide carries an APVMA registration for aquatic weed control. This means it can be applied to weeds growing in and around bodies of water, subject to label restrictions.

Beyond this, the active ingredient in Xtraqatic is the same as most standard 450g/L formulations.

Is Xtraqatic as effective as Roundup Biactive?

Both Glyphosate 450 Xtraqatic Biactive Herbicide and Roundup Biactive Herbicide are registered for aquatic weed control and contain glyphosate as the isopropylamine salt. However, Glyphosate 450 Xtraqatic Biactive Herbicide contains 450g/L glyphosate compared to the 360g/L in Roundup. The higher concentration means less product is needed per hectare to deliver equivalent rates of the active ingredient. This does not explicitly mean that Xtraqatic is more effective; however, it does mean you’ll require less product and thus, may save money on product or labour costs.

Can I use Xtraqatic in my dam to control aquatic weeds?

This depends on the weed you’re trying to control and the proximity to the body of water. The Glyphosate 450 Xtraqatic Biactive Herbicide label prohibits application within 0.5km of a potable water intake in a standing body of water like a lake, pond, or reservoir. Read the full label before use and confirm your target weed is listed, and ensure that you are not applying the product within 0.5km of a potable source.

Can I mix glyphosate with 2,4-D Amine?

Yes. According to the Glyphosate 450 Xtraqatic Biactive Herbicide product label, 2,4-D amine 625, 2,4-D ester, and 2,4-D dimethyl/diethanolamine 475 are compatible tank mix partners. Always follow the label rates for both products and check the label of your chosen 2,4-D product for any additional restrictions that may apply to your specific circumstances.

What is the mixing rate for Glyphosate 450 Xtraqatic Biactive Herbicide?

Mixing rates will vary depending on the target weed species, growth stage, and application method as follows:

  • Annual weed control with a boom sprayer: 1.5L/ha to 2.4L/ha
  • Knapsack application: 60mL to 80mL per 15L of water
  • Handgun application: 400mL to 560mL per 100L of water

As a guide, use the higher rate listed above when weeds exceed 15cm in height. Rates for perennial weeds will be higher — up to 7.2L/ha for species like couch and phragmites.

Always consult the product label to determine the correct rate for your target weed, equipment type, and environment before mixing.

How long after spraying can livestock and fish access treated water?

For livestock, no withholding period applies when the product is used per label instructions. The manufacturer, OzCrop, recommends keeping livestock clear of treated annual weeds for one day after spraying, and away from treated perennial weeds for seven days, to allow efficient herbicide absorption.

The product label does not specify a re-entry interval for fish or other aquatic organisms in treated water bodies. For specific guidance, reach out to OzCrop

Will rain hinder the effectiveness of Glyphosate 450 Xtraqatic Biactive Herbicide?

Yes, rain will adversely affect the efficacy of Glyphosate 450 Xtraqatic Biactive Herbicide. Rainfall that occurs up to six hours after application may reduce effectiveness, and heavy rainfall within two hours may wash the herbicide off the foliage, demanding a repeat treatment.

For best results, apply when no rain is forecast for at least six hours. Glyphosate 450 Xtraqatic Biactive Herbicide should also not be applied to weeds under stress from drought, waterlogging, disease, or frost, as this will further impact uptake and results.

Can this product be used on land weeds as well as aquatic weeds?

Yes — as a broad-spectrum knockdown herbicide, Glyphosate 450 Xtraqatic Biactive Herbicide is effective against a wide range of terrestrial weeds. The label covers annual and perennial weed control in pastures, conservation tillage, land preparation before winter and summer crops, rights-of-way, commercial and industrial areas, forestry, vine and tree crops, and non-crop areas. Ultimately, the aquatic registration is just another benefit — Glyphosate 450 Xtraqatic Biactive Herbicide is not a specialist aquatic-only product.

Does Glyphosate 450 Xtraqatic Biactive Herbicide leave residue in the soil or water?

In soil, Xtraqatic is non-residual. According to the product label, it is rapidly broken by soil microbes and hydrolysis from soil moisture, which is why cultivation or sowing can be conducted within one to 21 days of application, depending on the weed species treated.

In water, glyphosate is toxic to aquatic life and carries long-lasting effects. The product label includes specific restrictions around potable water intakes, and prohibits treated water from returning to dry channels or drains within four days post-application.

Glyphosate 450 Xtraqatic Biactive Herbicide is registered for aquatic use to control emerged weeds in all bodies of fresh and brackish water, including dams, whether flowing, non-flowing or transient. Treating weeds in or around a stock dam is a registered use, provided the label directions for aquatic application are followed. The label states the withholding period is "NOT REQUIRED WHEN USED AS DIRECTED", and under Protection of Livestock it confirms there is no withholding period for grazing stock. It recommends keeping livestock clear of treated weeds for one day (annual weeds) or seven days (perennial weeds) only to allow the herbicide to be absorbed, not for stock safety. The single water restriction on the label is that the product must not be applied within 0.5 km of a potable (human drinking) water intake. There is no equivalent restriction on stock drinking water, and the label sets no withholding period for stock watering from a treated dam.The label does not specifically address cattle drinking from a treated dam. Glyphosate 450 Xtraqatic Biactive Herbicide is only applied as a foliar spray to control weeds. It has no residual control and is ineffective if mixed with soil. If you use Glyphosate as a foliar spray, adding a wetter, adjuvant or surfactant would guarantee better control of weeds. Depending on the situation you are spraying, a non-ionic wetting agent should be sufficient, such as Wetter 1000 or Reactor 600.

Nemo Surfactant is recommended where aquatic-approved glyphosate is to be used. The addition of a surfactant reduces the spray droplets’ surface tension and allows the herbicide to penetrate the leaf surface more effectively, resulting in a better kill. Glyphosate 450 Xtraqatic Biactive Herbicide and Roundup Biactive Herbicide are both made from Glyphosate and registered for use in aquatic weed control. The Xtraqatic Biactive Herbicide is 20% stronger than traditional Roundup Biactive 360 Glyphosate Herbicide.

Tips For Use

Restraints

  • Do not disturb treated weeds by cultivation, sowing, or grazing for 1 day after treatment of annual weeds and 7 days for perennial weeds.
  • Do not treat weeds under poor growing conditions, including drought, waterlogging, disease, insect damage, or following frost.
  • Reduced control may occur when treating weeds heavily covered with dust or silt.
  • Rainfall within 6 hours of application may reduce effectiveness. If heavy rain falls within 2 hours of application, repeat treatment may be required.

Application and Mixing Instructions

  • For boom equipment, use fan nozzles at 240 to 280 kPa. Water volumes up to 200 L/ha are suitable.
  • For conservation tillage applications, use 50 to 100 L/ha water volume.
  • For aerial application, use a minimum of 15 L/ha. In high temperatures or on hilly terrain, increase to 30 to 80 L/ha.
  • Droplet size should be 250 to 350 microns. Increase to at least 300 microns in high temperatures or on slopes.
  • Adding a non-ionic surfactant at 200 mL per 100 L of 1000 g/L formulation may improve weed control. This is useful where water rates are high or product rates are low.
  • For wiper equipment, use 800 mL of the product in 2 litres of water.
  • Do not apply by air if the temperature exceeds 30°C. Avoid spraying in winds greater than 8 km/hr or in still air conditions.

Aquatic Precautions

  • Do not apply within 0.5 km of a potable water intake in flowing water. This 0.5 km buffer also applies to standing bodies of water such as lakes, ponds, and reservoirs.
  • Make applications to moving bodies of water while travelling upstream where possible to prevent concentration of herbicide.
  • Do not add extra surfactant or wetter unless the label approves it for aquatic situations.
  • Do not submerge weeds during spraying, as this may wash herbicide from the leaves.
  • Reduction in effectiveness may result if more than one quarter of the aboveground portion of the weed is submerged at treatment.

Compatibility

  • Compatible tank mix partners include atrazine (flowable or granular), dicamba, 2,4-D ester, 2,4-D Amine 625, metsulfuron, and chlorsulfuron.
  • Do not add any other agricultural chemical, spraying oil, or other material except as directed on the label.
  • Clay-contaminated water and hard water containing calcium salts can reduce glyphosate activity.

Protection of Livestock

  • No withholding period applies when used as directed.
  • Keep livestock clear of treated annual weeds for 1 day and perennial weeds for 7 days after spraying to allow efficient herbicide absorption.
  • For plants known to be toxic to stock, keep livestock away until complete browning occurs.

Storage

  • Store in original polyethylene or polypropylene containers. Keep containers securely sealed.
  • Do not store in galvanised steel or unlined steel containers. The product may react to produce hydrogen gas, which can form an explosive mixture with air if ignited.
  • Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible materials and foodstuff containers.
